The location in Port Alberni, British Columbia, Canada, is seeking talent to fill the position of Operations supervisor
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety, Environmental & Quality
- Ensures daily operational processes comply with all safety and environmental codes, policies, and regulations.
- Ensures employees receive the training required to perform their jobs safely and efficiently.
- Ensures that only authorized and adequately trained employees operate tools and equipment or handle hazardous chemicals.
- Supports leadership in developing and implementing departmental objectives to achieve quality standards and maintain ISO certification.
- Maintains a high standard of housekeeping within the assigned area.
Operations & Key Accountabilities.
- Responsible for the effective and efficient production of high-quality paper through the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of operational programs and procedures.
- Ensures systems and equipment operate efficiently, and that maintenance and repair activities are completed effectively.
- Prepares requisitions and coordinates the procurement of materials and supplies required for operations.
- Inspects operating circuits and production areas during each shift to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation issues to minimize downtime and maintain operational continuity.
- Ensures production, productivity, reliability, uptime, and quality targets are achieved.
- Collaborates with other Operations Supervisors and Maintenance teams to coordinate maintenance shutdown schedules.
- Performs Lockout/Tagout isolations in accordance with company procedures and safety requirements.
- Tracks and analyzes maintenance downtime to identify recurring equipment issues and opportunities for improvement.
- Contributes to the development of annual and five-year capital plans that support departmental and organizational objectives.
- Monitors equipment performance and production processes and responds to operational issues in a timely manner.
- Completes shift and production reports and communicates operational status, concerns, and priorities to incoming shifts and management.
- Researches, evaluates, and recommends initiatives that promote operational excellence, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
- Oversees and coordinates papermaking and paper coating operations through process control systems, machine consoles, and control panels to ensure production requirements are met.
- Monitors process control systems, panel indicators, gauges, video monitors, and other instruments to identify equipment malfunctions and ensure operations remain within established process specifications.
- Reviews instrument readings, production data, and quality test results, and directs operational adjustments to optimize production performance, product quality, and process efficiency.
Employee Relations
- Provides leadership and direction to employees and fosters an environment which motivates the team to utilize capabilities in achieving desired business results
- Coach and train mill operators, track training progress and build a strong team environment.
- Handles frontline employee issues and may administer aspects of the collective agreement in a unionized mill.
Financial Accountability
- Awareness of potential financial impacts on operations and communicates or escalates matters in timely fashion, including destruction of property.
- Support budget preparation with regards to operations and maintenance costs.
Leadership
- Maintain extensive partnerships across the company and develop a positive working environment with the team ensuring that members are empowered, encouraged, and acknowledged for their contributions and performance.
- Ensure decisions align with collective agreement and verify through Operations Manager and Human Resources authorities.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Technical Experience & Education
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
- Minimum of 3 years of leadership or supervisory experience.
- Post-secondary education in related field and/or wood processing experience is an asset.
- Working in a unionized environment with pulp and paper experience is an added advantage.

- Demonstrates strong strategic thinking and project management skills.
- Proven ability to lead and direct teams within a unionized environment.

Salary Range: $107,000 to $119,000 per annum (actual salary offered will be commensurate with education, experience, and internal parity).
