The location in Crofton, British Columbia, Canada, is seeking talent to fill the position of Millwright. This job is full-time permanent.
Position Summary
The Millwright is responsible for maintaining and repairing industrial machinery at Domtar’s Crofton Mill, ensuring safe and efficient operation of equipment in a pulp and paper manufacturing environment. This role ensures safe and efficient operation of equipment, supporting mill production and reliability. The position requires strong technical skills, physical stamina, and the ability to work in varied and sometimes challenging environmental conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and schematic drawings.
- Install, align, dismantle, and relocate stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment (e.g., pumps, fans, conveyors, tanks).
- Operate hoisting and lifting devices (cranes, jacks, chain falls, tractors) to position machinery and parts during installation and repair.
- Inspect and examine machinery to detect irregularities and malfunctions.
- Install, troubleshoot, and maintain power transmission, vacuum, hydraulic, pneumatic, and programmable logic control systems.
- Adjust machinery and repair or replace defective parts.
- Operate machine tools (e.g., lathes, grinders) to fabricate parts as required.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, and adjustments.
- Construct or oversee the construction of foundations for machinery.
- Assemble and install equipment using hand and power tools (wrenches, pry bars, hammers, drills, impact tools, chisels, etc.).
- Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations and company policies.
Qualifications
- Education/Certification:
- Completion of an Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) apprenticeship program.
- Interprovincial Red Seal certification as a Millwright (preferred).
- Experience:
- 3–5 years of relevant millwright/industrial mechanic experience, ideally in pulp and paper, heavy manufacturing, or similar industrial environments.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Ability to read technical drawings and specifications.
- Good verbal communication and teamwork skills.
- Safety awareness and commitment to safe work practices.
- Manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to work to exacting standards.
- Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, and in noisy or odorous environments.
- Knowledge of computer applications including MS Outlook
Working Conditions
- Work performed in a pulp and paper mill environment at Domtar’s Crofton location, with exposure to heat, humidity, noise, and odours.
- May be required to work in cramped spaces or at heights.
- Work schedule may include shift work, overtime, and emergency call-outs.
Physical Demands
- Standing: Frequent (up to 2 hours at a time).
- Sitting: Occasional (up to 30 minutes at a time).
- Kneeling, crouching, bending: Frequent (2–5 hours/day)
- Crawling/squatting: Occasional (up to 2.5 hours/day).
- Reaching: Occasional (horizontal and vertical).
- Hand movements: Constant (use of tools and equipment).
- Pushing/pulling: Frequent (carts, chain falls, wrenches, tool boxes).
- Lifting: Frequent – average 10 lbs overhead, maximum 40 lbs.
- Carrying: Frequent – 15–40 lbs, up to 50 feet.
- Walking: Frequent (10 minutes at a time, varies by task).
- Climbing: Frequent (stairs), occasional (ladders).
- Twisting: Continuous.

This is a bargaining unit position. Employment, benefits and pension are in the Collective Agreement that has been negotiated by Domtar and the Public & Private Workers of Canada (PPWC), Local 2.
