Forestry Student / Contract Position,

Northwest Ontario Woodlands Operations

Our Thunder Bay location in Ontario, Canada is currently seeking talent to fill the position of Renewal Forestry Student / Contract Position, Northwest Ontario Woodlands Operations. The Renewal Forestry Student / Contract Position reports to the Renewal Coordinator and is responsible for the effective implementation of the forest renewal and maintenance program. In addition, the position provides forest management planning support on designated Sustainable Forest Licence areas to ensure a sustained supply of wood to Domtar production facilities.

Your Challenges:

  • Ensure application of the highest safety standards to achieve superior health and safety results
  • Provide contact oversite / quality checking for tree plant and mechanical site preparation contractors, while ensuring that forest renewal activities are completed in a cost-effective manner
  • Conduct regeneration, tending and other renewal surveys
  • Perform water-crossing inspections as part of the annual program
  • Assist in the development of writing post-harvest FOPs for blocks where harvesting activities are completed.
  • Other projects and opportunities that occur during the contract period
  • Working both as a member of a team and individually in remote settings around Northern Ontario

Your team:

  • Reporting to the Renewal Coordinator, you will be part of a results-oriented team whose members are encouraged to exceed expectations

Your profile:

  • Enrolled in a Forestry Degree Program or a Forestry Technical Diploma Program at an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Must be available to commence work the first week of May 2025
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License, with a clean driver’s abstract
  • Basic outdoor and wilderness skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Commitment to working safely and creating a safe workplace

Your assets and skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and individually in remote settings around Northern Ontario, to communicate with all levels of the organization, see the big picture and to adapt quickly to change
  • Strong attention to details, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • The ideal candidate will possess the drive and passion to continuously improve upon the health and safety, efficiency, production, and planning targets for Ontario Woodlands
  • Demonstrated experience using of MS Office, ArcGIS applications and solid computer skills
