The location in Crofton, British Columbia, Canada, is seeking talent to fill the position of Maintenance Supervisor. This job is full-time permanent.
The Maintenance Supervisor is a member of a team responsible for maximizing long term equipment availability within the cost constraints imposed. Reporting to a Maintenance Superintendent, the key responsibilities of the Maintenance Supervisor are to: motivate assigned employees, determine the skills necessary to complete priorities, coordinate and follow-up priorities and work orders, perform safety and quality monitoring of the tasks, recommend improvements and cost reductions, identify the causes of failures for breakdowns and repetitive repairs, and recommend skill levels and training courses for apprentices and journeymen. This position supervises mechanical trades.
The Maintenance Supervisor will partner with operations, other maintenance teams, purchasing and mill leaders to realize improved reliability in operations. The ideal candidate will build effective, trusting relationships and partnerships across the mill to execute the implementation of plans supporting the company’s strategic business direction.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reviews, adheres to, and directs the adherence to safe work procedures in the workplace and generally models and promotes a safe work environment.
- Responsible for the day-to-day motivation of members of their assigned Team in the safe and effective performance of their duties. The supervisor is responsible to initiate any activities that they see fit to promote safe and effective performance.
- Using good management skills, the supervisor will assess their Team’s ability to complete the workload requested, including making recommendations for the use of contractors. The Supervisor may be involved in directing the work of contractors, as necessary.
- The supervisor will take a secondary role in the planning and scheduling of assigned work, working in collaboration with Planners and other departmental leaders, including recommendations to the Planner for the sequencing and details of assigned jobs, goals and objectives.
- The Supervisor is responsible for facilitating the acquisition of material for jobs that are done on an emergency basis, including collaborating with the Planner to identify the appropriate skills and trades necessary to carry out the work. Supervisors will also provide feedback required by the Planner to monitor the planning and scheduling function for continuous improvement.
- The supervisor will take a lead role in the identification of failures and/or repetitive breakdowns. The supervisor will be responsible for the identification of the solution for the problems within their expertise (those not requiring major process of engineering changes). They will utilize all their assigned Team in development of these solutions and relay the requirements to the Planner via the work order system for implementation. Supervisor feedback is intended to support future adjustments to the preventive/predictive maintenance program.
- The supervisor is responsible for the accurate and timely reporting of all safety and production related incidents in their assigned area. They will also provide the Planner with information needed to maintain the equipment documentation and appropriate maintenance management systems.
- The supervisor is responsible for the assessment and identification of technical skill deficiencies among the members of their assigned Teams, including providing short term on the spot style training where appropriate and will make recommendations to his Superintendent for more in-depth or longer-term professional development.
- The supervisor is responsible for staying abreast of technical advances within their area of expertise by meeting with sales or other technical personnel and for requesting training of any kind that they believe will help overcome demonstrated skill inadequacy or will further develop their knowledge, skills and abilities within the organization.
- The supervisor may be asked to participate or lead other projects from time to time. The details, responsibilities and accountabilities will be discussed with the appropriate Superintendent or Manager, when opportunities arise.
Education & Experience
- Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or Technologist or Red Seal trades certification plus a minimum of 2 years direct supervisory experience.
- Related industrial or manufacturing experience – experience in the pulp sector will be an asset.
- Minimum 3-5 yrs of equivalent experience.
- Experience supervising in a unionized environment beneficial.
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external contacts under circumstances that may be highly sensitive and adversarial.
- Expert relationship building skills.
- Excellent critical thinking and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to mentor and provide leadership skills to recommend and implement change are essential.
This is a newly certified bargaining unit position however, a collective agreement has not been negotiated.
The compensation for this position will be between $92,960 to 116,200 CDN per annum.
