Process Engineer - Quality

Domtar is seeking a Process Engineer with a focus in Pulp & Paper (Paper Science) or Chemical Engineering to work in the Quality area of the Final Products Manufacturing Department of the Marlboro Mill which is located in Bennettsville, SC where approximately 1000 tons of pulp and paper products are produced daily.

 

This engineering role focuses on the internal quality of the paper machine and pulp machine operation areas.  This role utilizes data analysis to identify quality improvement opportunities; facilitates and leads team efforts to identify key improvement opportunities; and develops / implements processes, systems, and behaviors to sustain and grow continuous improvement culture. This position reports to the Quality Manager and has responsibilities as listed below.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Grade Development
    • Assist in developing new quality specifications - review and approve specifications for new grades. Develop additional specifications/guidelines. Ensure current specifications are "customer based." Assist in coordinating Quality Improvement and Grade Development Trials - work with Engineers and Operations on trial plans.
  • Quality
    • Work with management and Operational work teams to utilize the human performance improvement (HPI) process, identifying root-cause off-quality events and driving permanent solutions
    • Organize and track solutions in Enablon system (mill-wide database)
    • Interface with customers to build positive relationships and resolve issues/complaints
  • Organizational Effectiveness
    • Develop quality standards
    • Lead teams to ensure product performance
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Serve as Mill resource for continuous improvement projects and tools
    • Utilize lean tools (6 Sigma, DMAIC, FMEA, etc.) to assist with leading team efforts to identify continuous improvement projects
  • Safety
    • Be a safety advocate; lead by example
  • Suppliers / External Technical Resources
    • Interface with external technical resources and suppliers to initiate quality enhancement, cost reduction, and process improvement trials

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Be an advocate for and an active member of FPMD management team
  • Support all operations and maintenance activities of the FPMD
  • Monitor daily operations for environmental compliance
  • Review daily operations strategies to ensure that we are safely and efficiently meeting our goals
  • Help identify and participate in continuous improvement and cost savings projects.
  • Work with shift teams and technicians to troubleshoot issues as they arise in daily operations
  • Participate in planning of outages and react to unscheduled events
  • Help to facilitate good communications between the rotating shift teams, day maintenance teams, contract maintenance teams, and day staff
  • Participate in troubleshooting efforts such as Root Cause Failure Analysis
  • Participate in review of existing SOP’s, development of new SOP’s, and training of personnel as needed

Required Qualifications / Experience

  • BS in Pulp and Paper (Paper Science) or Chemical Engineering
  • Minimum of five (5) years paper manufacturing experience
  • High degree of computer literacy to include MS Office
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient planning, organization, and time-management skills
  • Results-focused and detail-oriented
  • Well-developed problem-solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • The candidate should be familiar with or capable of learning the paper-making process
  • Safety and team-oriented with a good work ethic, positive attitude, and the ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Experience with SAP, Excel, Word, PI, and PARCView is desirable.
